QUESTIONS ON THE FILM â€Å"THE HOURS† 1) â€Å"The Hours†, based on the novel written by Michael Cunningham, is more than a biographical movie about Virginia Woolf. How can you discribe the importance and co- relation between the three female main characters: Virginia, Laura Brown and Clarissa Vaughan? The novel is essentially about women. Women from different periods, of different ages, and oddly the same in various aspects. We get to know women that apparently lead perfect lives, considering the external aspect, and all of them come to a moment in their lives when they stumble upon the superficiality of their days and face their disturbed inner selves. The fates of the three characters cross because of the fact that Laura is reading exactly the book Virginia wrote, while Clarissa Vaughan appears to be a kind of living breathing Clarissa Dalloway. 2) It is known that the movie tells a lot about the feminine universe in its various aspects. How were men inserted in this universe? What feelings could they represent in the movie? Men were shown as elements that were on the verge of the story, but, at the same time, they were essential to the development of the plot, as well as remarkable influences to the states the women are in in the movie. That is, though their presence in the lives of the three characters is of great importance for us to understand what they’re going through, they always seem to be kind of unaware of what great tempests are occurring in the women’s heads. 3) Relationship between women is also largely explored in the movie, as well as in the writings of Virginia Woolf. Considering that the movie is based on a literary book and is full of metaphors, what could the three kisses highlighted in the film mean, beyond the images shown (the kisses between female characters)? As the film tells a lot about the feminine universe, the fact that they highlighted these three specific kisses between the main characters could be an attempt to show another way through which different feminine universes can interact, and they didn’t necessarily mean â€Å"sexual involvement†. The first kiss, for instance, between Laura and Kitty, could be easily taken as a statement that the former â€Å"was in love† with her female friend. That could really be the case, but the metaphorical nature of the movie can also provide us with other interpretations when we’re willing to dig deeper.

College Tuition Essay

College as we all know is very pricey from the cost of tuition all the way to the text books and fee’s, but the question I’m sure everyone including myself would like to know is why? And where all the money that we pay is actually going. College is what everyone knows as furthering there education or it’s a way to get a better paying job. One of the very first things people look at when applying for a college the is the tuition. How much is this school going to cost me. The cost of college tuition has changed a lot over the years. who knows what it will be in the next five ten years. But as for right now its expensive enough. With there being so many different colleges across the U. S. There should be one universal cost for all the four year colleges and one for the two year colleges instead of having one college cost thousands of dollars more then the other ones. I am in my second year of college at the community college of Denver, and granite it’s one of the cheaper schools I still think that the cost is outrages. We go to college to better our lives to get more training and education. So we can get that better paying job. Its not easy to do and not every one can do it. But is spending all this money really helping us better our lives or is it making life harder and more stressful? Most people cant pay the full tuition up front so they look at there options. Taking out a loan, or getting on a payment plan. If you decided to take out a loan that’s great you don’t have to worry bout money right now its taken care of. What happens later on down the road when your out of school finally and still broke but this time your in more debt then you know how to handle. Is it necessary to have the cost of tuition so high that a lot of people cant afford it, are school boards or school officials trying to put us in debt? It’s hard enough to get out of debt and when your there the money just keeps adding up. Tuition is different for every school and I’m sure there is a hand full of people if not more that have taken out loans to help pay for there way through school. Even after you pay your tuition you still have text books and other fees that are totally separate from what you already paid. Is attending college really helping us better ourselves or is it just helping us dig ourselves in to places like debt that are hard to get out of? College is expensive for multiple reasons. It may seem like your paying all this money for nothing but in all reality your not. The money you pay goes towards keeping the campus clean and running. Your paying so much so they can hire the bestinstructors. So they can to teach you all they can for what you have paid. You pay the money might as well get all you can out of it. Those are the two main reason to why you pay so much in tuition is to keep things running. The money also buys computers for labs and materials you might need minus your text books. There is maybe a handful of things that you can think of that maybe our money that we pay for tuition goes towards. It still feels like we pay more then they need us to. Every class has its own requirements. Most classes require you to purchase a text book that you may or may not use during the semester. You go to buy the book and you see the price and it isn’t cheap not even the used ones are all that cheap. Why have us pay so much in tuition if we still have to purchase books and other things. The cost of books aren’t cheap. Why cant there be class sets. Were we check them out and in order to receive a grade for that class at the end of the semester you have to check your book back in. not everybody wants to buy a book they will use once. I personally think that with all the money we give the school for tuition they could at least supply the books and materials needed. Isn’t there a better way then having us as students spend more money then necessary. We just want to further our education not be put in debt or tight money situations. The more you pay the better education and training your going to get, because the board of educators can afford to hire better educators. There are lots of colleges around the united states, and every one has a different tuition price. As well as different fields that they can help teach you more about or train you in. for an example metro is known for the school of business. Most schools have one specialty program that A. is always really pricey and B.  makes sure you get where you would need to be when you get that college degree. They are pretty much saying you get what you pay for. Why cant there just be a universal tuition? What is the pint in having in state and out of state prices? The cost of college tuition and the price of text books most likely wont be going down anytime soon. But now you have more of a back ground as to why you pay so much and to where all your money is actually going. I started out this paper thinking that the cost of tuition was way to high and I can honestly say that I still think that even after my research.

Because camp has played a huge role in my life as well as Danny’s, we were all very impressed with his decision. On the day of his Bar Mitzvah after completing his service, Danny read a speech to all of the people in attendance. He explained what the camp was, what the camp meant to him, and thanked everyone for all of their donations. And then he said the words I will never forget. â€Å"With all of your help, I will be able to send three kids to camp this summer!†Everyone, especially me, was in shock. Danny actually pulled this whole project together and made it happen. When I looked at him standing before all of our friends and family, I had never seen him so full of pride in his entire life. Annoying, difficult, and selfish are typical adjectives many use to describe their siblings. These words exemplify the ways my brother and I used to be before his Bar Mitzvah. But from the moment I saw a changed Danny stand before me and tell everyone what he did to help others, I knew I had to change too. Danny’s speech and actions showed me how helping others not only makes the less fortunate feel great, but it makes you yourself feel like a better person. Danny, a normally shy and timid kid, felt so powerful and proud after he turned in all his donations to the camp. Because of what Danny did, I have changed for the better as well. Before Danny’s Bar Mitzvah, I took so many things for granted and I never took the time to think about others less fortunate than I, but because of Danny I have learned the importance of putting others before myself. The annoying, difficult, and selfish person I used to be took a positive change and developed into a more caring, considera te, and thoughtful human being, all in thanks to my little brother’s push in the right direction.

International Marketplace America is increasingly connected to the rest of the world as a global economy becomes more important. We participate in the international marketplace both as providers of goods and as consumers. How we buy and sell affects us both in terms of what goods we can choose from, but also what jobs are available, and what kinds of industries will come to dominate our economy. One of the most important changes in recent years in our place in the global economy is the dropping of trade barriers with such political moves as the approval of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This has had an impact on our economy which has filtered down to the everyday lives of our people, both as workers and as consumers. On the one hand, NAFTA has been good in that it has caused the dropping of tariffs by Mexico and Canada, making U. S. goods more affordable in those countries. This has helped to stimulate some areas of the American economy by opening up new markets to sell our products abroad. In urging the passage of NAFTA, the Clinton Administration publications said that NAFTA would increase high wage jobs, boost U.S. growth, and expand the base from which U.S. firms and workers could compete in a world-wide market. It predicted job gains of approximately a million due to increased Mexican exports, and suggested that by 1995 there would be approximately 200,000 more high wage jobs created due to the opening of free markets. The industries most expected to benefit were those dealing in computer technology, machine tools, aerospace equipment, telecommunications equipment, electronics, and medical devices -- all areas where wages were already 12 per cent higher than the national average (Expanding (1993), 3-5). Such growth in jobs would have an effect on the workers and their communities, giving a boost to both individual wealth and the community itself. These benefits spread outward to other areas of the economy, helping people who have jobs in retail, construction, and other areas where workers spend their paychecks. However, there is another effect. As a result of the cheaper labor in Mexico, participation in this part of the international marketplace has led to the loss of many American jobs in certain industries, such as the garment and textile industries. After four years of stability, apparel industry jobs plunged suddenly last year, falling more than ten percent from 945,000 at the end of 1994 to 346,000 in 1995. In addition, 42,000 jobs vanished in the fabrics industry for at total shrinkage of 141,000 jobs. These jobs represented 40 percent of all manufacturing jobs lost in the United States last year ("Squeezing" (1996), D1). Carl Priestland, an economist for the American Apparel Manufacturers Association, predicted that this year another America will likely lose up to another 50,000 jobs in the industry ("Squeezing" (1996), D1). These losses especially affect workers in small towns like Pisgah, Alabama, and Granger, Texas. The approximate 100 people let go in Pisgah this year were emotionally devastated. Not only are they seeing their specific jobs disappear, they are also faced with seeing the entire industry vanish from their area, taking their opportunities with it. One example, Martha Smith, who lost her job sewing children's clothes, is now enrolled in a state-sponsored program to learn clerical skills. She is thereby trading a blue-collar position for one which is in a low-paying and overcrowded field. In fact a great many of the over 650 people who lost sewing jobs in Alabama this year are women struggling to support their families ("Squeezing" (1996), D1). They face a market where they have few skills and little to offer. Given the largely female makeup of the sewing industry, it is unfeasible to try to fit all these displaced workers in the clerical field. And on top of that, when a plant such as the one in Pisgah closes, the entire town and region suffer. Many such towns are dependent on one employer. When that employer leaves for cheaper labor in Mexico, the local economy cannot easily recover. Local merchants lose their customer base; suppliers to the mills lose their markets. In the textile industry, the danger to the worker from NAFTA is twofold. First, there is the danger of moving the plant and its jobs to Mexico, where labor costs are considerably cheaper. Second, there is the increase in importing cheaper textiles and sewn goods from Mexico, where they are already lower-priced due to the cheap Mexican labor.
